2nd Ahoghill Company Section began work on our second canoe tonight, as we marked out the wooden panels that will form the hull of the boat.
Leaders William and Jonathan supervised several of the boys as they drew the outlines of the panels onto a sheet of 6mm marine plywood, which we had bought in Coleraine Building Supplies during the summer.
Marine grade plywood offers an improvement over the exterior plywood used on our first canoe, as it contains less voids within the plies that make up each sheet. This will reduce the potential for weak spots – which decrease strength, and increase the chances of water retention.
Although the hull requires 14 panels overall, we only had to mark out 4 separate shapes; which can be used as templates for the remaining panels.
With the templates marked, William will be able to cut out the panels in preparation for the next stage in the process.
