2nd Ahoghill's Seniors football team travelled to Ballyclare to take part in the first round of this year's national competition.
Twenty two teams had entered from across Northern Ireland, and organised into four groups. Our group was hosted by 1st Ballyclare in the Sixmile Leisure Centre, with 1st Kilkeel and 24th Belfast also attending. 7th Portadown did not compete as originally planned.
A few recent foot injuries had made two of our senior boys unavailable, leaving us with only five players to compete on the night.
The boys got off to a good start against 24th Belfast, in a game that was described as a “cracker” by one of Ballyclare’s leaders. Ahoghill scored “a couple of super goals” to claim a 4-3 win.
However our lack of squad depth soon took a toll, as our next two opponents were able to field fresh legged substitutes. This lead to 6-0 and 9-0 defeats to 1st Ballyclare and 1st Kilkeel respectively.
Unfortunately the final results left us outside of the top two places that would progress from the group. Congratulations to 1st Kilkeel and 1st Ballyclare, we wish them well as they continue in the competition.
