Two boys from 2nd Ahoghill Company Section overcame foggy conditions to complete a hike in the Antrim Hills.
The aim of the hike was to climb Lurigethan, which looms 250m above the shores of Waterfoot. We approached from the southwest, and began with a steep climb from the Ballyeamon Road to reach the plateau of the mountain.
A thick blanket of fog obscured the spectacular views we had hoped to see, but provided a mysterious atmosphere for the boys’ first foray on the Antrim Hills. The boys also gained some valuable experience climbing barbed wire fences, as we encountered more than a handful along our 3km walk to the northern end of the mountain.
After a quick stop for lunch we began our return leg. As we descended the northern face of Lurigethan, the fog cleared to give us our first glimpse of the coast and surrounding landscape. We then followed the Ballyeamon Road back up the valley to the car to complete our hike.
