A weekend at Newferry

News |

2nd Ahoghill Company Section hit the waters of the River Bann with two separate trips to Newferry this weekend.

Friday

Our first visit was on Friday night, as the canoes made their first outing of the summer. The day’s earlier rain had cleared up to provide perfect paddling conditions, allowing the leaders and three boys to leisurely explore the mouth of Lough Beg against a sunny backdrop.

Saturday

We returned to Newferry on Saturday night for a barbecue with the NCOs, the boys were free to paddle about in the canoes while they waited on their food. We were joined by Brookside Presbyterian’s minister William Moody, who took the opportunity for his first trip in a BB canoe.

After eating our fill of sausages, and with daylight fading we began to pack up for the journey home. But not before two of the boys braved the cold waters by jumping in, accompanied by the inflatable swan from our sketch at the annual display.

All in all it was a successful weekend, and hopefully the first of many spent at Newferry this summer.
