Woodturning Demonstration

News |

2nd Ahoghill Company Section learned the basics of wood turning, as two local experts gave a introductory demonstration on Friday night.

Brookside Presbyterian Church member Hugh Young had organised for his friend and fellow Irish Woodturner’s Guild member David O’Neill to give a short talk on woodturning.

David began with a brief overview of the craft, before explaining the various parts of the lathe and their functions.

The first demonstration of the night was spindle turning, as David created a simple garden dibber. He took the opportunity to explain the various chisels and types of cut he was using.

Next, David demonstrated how to turn a wooden bowl. Again David explained the tools and techniques he was using as he first turned the outside of the bowl before turning the inside.

To conclude the night David demonstrated the wide range of shapes and finishes that can be achieved with wood turning, by showcasing a selection of pieces created by Hugh.

Many thanks to David and Hugh for sharing their time and expertise with us during an interesting and informative evening.
