2nd Ahoghill Company Section hit the waters yet again as they ventured into the heart of Lough Beg to explore Church Island.
We set off from Newferry and began the familiar journey around the bend of the river towards Corker Island, our first stop of the day.
High water levels had submerged the camp site we used during our previous outings, offering an unexpected backdrop as we ate our lunch. After a surreal look around camp via canoe, we continued further into Lough Beg.
Our second stop was a smaller island close to the eastern bank of the lough, where we warmed ourselves with a cup of hot chocolate; before tackling the final two kilometers of open water which separated us from Church Island.
After a tough but rewarding battle against the currents, we arrived on the northern shore of the island. With sunset approaching we quickly explored the ruins of the church from which the island gets its name, before making the return journey to Newferry.
