Expedition: Glenariff to Cleggan

News |

Five boys completed a practise expedition for their Duke of Edinburgh Bronze Award, hiking from Glenariff Forest to Cleggan Forest via Collin Top.

The group was dropped off at the edge of the northern section of Glenariff Forest to begin the first leg of their expedition, and navigated their way along the forest paths to the main entrance of the forest park. They continued past the visitor’s centre and newly developed caravan site, before heading south towards the edge of the forest and setting up camp for the night.

The boys rendezvoused with the leaders on Saturday morning, before setting off on the second leg of their expedition. After following the Dungonnell Road east roughly 2km, the group headed off road onto the heather, and took a bearing towards Collin Top.

The summit provided the perfect vantage point to eat lunch, offering great views of Dungonnell Dam to the west and Waterfoot to the east.

With the batteries recharged the group headed down the southern side of the mountain towards Cleggan Forest. After missing their planned tree break, the boys eventually made their way onto the forest path which would lead them out of the forest to the pick up point.

The expedition also qualified Gary McDowell for his President’s Badge, which he later received at our 50th Annual Display.
