Brookside Presbyterian minister William Moody spent an evening with the Company Section, as he took the Bible study and later shared his hockey skills during P.E.
William began the night by taking the Bible study with the boys. We had reached the final talk in the Jesus is Better course, which focused on the Old Testament prophet Jonah.
William recounted the story of how Jonah tried to flee from God’s call before eventually obeying and warning the people of Nineveh about their sinful ways. He explained to the boys how Jesus is better than Jonah, because of his obedience to follow God’s will and because of his love for sinful people.
Having played competitive hockey in his youth, William had agreed to stay around for our P.E. session and teach the boys a few hockey skills using a some training drills.
The first drill taught puck control and shooting. The boys had to dribble around a series of cones, before going one on one with a goalkeeper in an attempt to score.
The next drill focused on defending and attacking. One member of the team acted as defender, while the rest took turns at attacking. The attacker had to dribble around the defender before shooting into an empty net, while the defender attempted to tackle them and knock the puck out of play.
The final drill was a classic game of piggy in the middle, with one player trying to intercept the puck as the rest of their team passed it around him. This encouraged player movement and positioning.
The teams finished the night with a series of matches, giving them the perfect opportunity to practise the skills they had learned against real opposition.
Many thanks to William for his involvement during the night’s schedule, and for his continued support and encouragement throughout the year.
